AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man named Jameswilliams Gabriel who graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, earning an outstanding 4.95 cumulative grade point average out of 5.00,at Nile University, Nigeria has achieved another succcess.
He has secured admission into the prestigious University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Gabriel’s story is one of academic achievement, excellence, and consistent success.
Gabriel's Story and How He Did It
In 2023, he emerged as the overall best graduating student of Nile University, Nigeria, graduating with a remarkable First-Class degree. His achievement earned him several notable awards and significant cash prizes, and he was also a two-time full scholarship awardee.
After his undergraduate studies, Gabriel went on to found The 5.0 GPA Nation, one of Africa’s largest academic excellence communities, with over 100,000 students.
Through this platform, he has led nationwide academic excellence tours, partnered with schools and education-focused NGOs, and mentored thousands of learners, many of whom have achieved perfect GPAs and First-Class degrees.
He built this impressive portfolio while also preparing for his postgraduate studies application abroad.
Gabriel’s preparation eventually paid off when he was awarded admission into the University of Cambridge for a Master’s degree. Reflecting on his achievement on LinkedIn, Gabriel shared how much the success meant to him:
He recalled completing assignments at his primary school, Living Word Academy using lanterns, candles, or moonlight, because his family could not always afford electricity.
He spoke about competing for academic excellence at his secondary school, Deeper Life High School, despite attending a school that, socioeconomically, he felt he had “no right” to be in.
Gabriel also shared how he prepared for university examinations from betting shops, because he could not afford to stay in Nile University’s million-naira-per-semester hostels as the alternative available was a neighbouring village with little access to electricity.
“If it were a journey, my family and I have been travelling on foot. So yes, this means a lot, considering how far I have come,” he said.
Even as funding decisions were still pending, Gabriel emphasized that receiving an offer from an institution that nurtured minds like Darwin, Newton, and Turing was worth celebrating, regardless of the anxiety that came with it.
He described anxiety as a double-edged sword for highly intelligent and responsible individuals, often causing them to delay celebrating their wins because they are too aware of the hurdles ahead.
He revealed that this mindset was why he initially did not share his success in winning the Mastercard Foundation’s exclusive financial and mentorship sponsorship for his application process, an opportunity he earned largely due to his undergraduate studies performance.
Now that he has gained admission, Gabriel stated clearly that he does not plan to downplay his wins anymore and he would go on to share the behind-the-scenes of his application journey.
Gabriel thanked Nile University, the Mastercard Foundation, and his lecturers and professors, stating that they were not just educators, but believers, not only in the story he created at Nile, but in all that he could still create.
“Never let your excellence be in doubt. Bag the As. Bag the 5.0 GPAs. Bag the First-Class. Shine your light on the path of others. Excellence and impact are currencies that never go out of style,” he said.
According to him, these values earned him a place in one of the greatest institutions mankind has known, even though he began his journey travelling on foot.
Gabriel urged students to keep taking excellent and impactful steps, ignore distractions, and remain focused. “I am still living a story that is reigniting the passion for academic excellence in my generation,” he said.
