AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man who experienced delay in admission for five years finally achieves success, earns first-class degree in Accounting.

A resilient and determined Nigerian man named Sunday Odeyale has triumphed over a prolonged five-year admission delay to achieve remarkable academic success. He graduated with a first-class degree in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

Sharing his story on LinkedIn, Sunday described himself as a trailblazer who embraces the extraordinary. “While some may label me ‘abnormal,’ I see myself as someone who carves his own path by being unconventional and daring to do things differently,” he said.

Sunday’s academic journey began with challenges. Despite excelling in his Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams, he faced repeated rejections from federal institutions, traditionally seen as the pinnacle of Nigerian education.

However, he refused to let these setbacks define him. After five years of perseverance, he gained admission to study Accounting at OAU in 2019.

Determined to excel, Sunday set ambitious goals for himself from his first year. He quickly discovered that success required more than just academic diligence—it demanded focus, time management, and balance.

His achievements include Academic Excellence of graduating with First-Class Honours, scoring 36 A’s, 9 B’s, and 2 C’s across 47 courses.

He also earned his Chartered Accountant (ACA) certification by his third year and pursued additional professional certifications.

Additionally, he achieved leadership and Service,  serving as the President of the Accounting Students’ Association (NUASA) and participating in various volunteering and community service projects.

He also gained work Experience through practical industry exposure by starting work before his second year of study and increasing his spiritual and Personal Growth, maintaining a strong faith that served as a guiding force throughout his journey.

Sunday’s path was not without difficulties. He endured financial hardships, hunger, and moments of self-doubt when his results did not reflect his efforts.

The uncertainties of academic strikes and the success of peers added further pressure. Yet, his resilience carried him through.

Sunday expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him.  “I am because you are.” Now, as a graduate, he is eager to embrace transformative opportunities in the industry.
