The UK Government in an announcement on Sunday said that Nigeria will be added to the country’s red list, barring citizens of Nigeria from travelling into the country until it is removed from the red list.
It was also announced that the United Kingdom through its embassy will no longer attend to visitors visa applications until the travel restrictions are lifted.
Although the announcement stated that the ban which is set to kick off by 4am on Monday, December 6, 2021 remains temporary, visa applicants who meet the requirements of the UK immigration rules will need to wait as their applications will be paused until the ban is lifted.
The UK also stated that some Nigerians are exempted from the ban, listing the exemption conditions to include: UK and Irish citizens and residents currently in Nigeria, persons who have a job in the UK as well as some other medical or compassionate reasons.
“Nigeria’s entry on to the UKs travel red list is a temporary measure introduced to prevent further cases of the Omicron COVID19 variant from entering the UK. This decision will be reviewed on 20 December,” the statement reads partly.
Many scholarship award winners in the United Kingdom has resumed to their respective Universities. However many more students presently in Nigeria are hoping to get a visa to resume for courses starting in January.
