AFRICA | 23-year-old Omotayo Dada has emerged as the best-graduating student of the 2022 Nigerian Law School set, earning 10 prestigious awards for her outstanding academic performance.
In 2015, Omotayo started her higher studies as a Law student at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) to obtain a Bachelor of Law (LLB). She graduated from the university in 2021 with a second-class upper (2.1) grade and thereafter proceeded to the Nigerian Law School later in the same year.
Enrolling in the Nigerian Law School allows Law graduates to practice as Solicitors for the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Omotayo’s academic performance in the Nigerian Law School is exceptional. Not that she outperformed her colleagues to emerge best-graduating student in her set, she outperformed her university grade by meeting first-class.
She narrated that she felt surprised when it was revealed that she was the best graduating student noting that past stories of best graduating students show that most of them had first-class in their universities while she had a second class.

“I was surprised because, from stories and videos of past BGSs (Best Graduating Students) that I had watched and read, they were people with stellar academic records. I remember the very last one I watched; she was a three-time BGS before she became the best-graduating student at the Nigerian Law School,” she said in an interview with Punch NG.
Growing up, Omotayo once dreamed of becoming a banker. She admired the polished appearance of bankers whenever she accompanied her mother to the bank.
However, her struggle with Mathematics made her rethink that path. Instead, she found herself drawn to debates and competitions—interests that, along with her father’s influence as a lawyer, ultimately shaped her decision to study law.
Despite her dedication, Law School had its own challenges. Omotayo recalled moments of frustration, where despite studying tirelessly, she struggled with self-doubt and felt uncertain about her understanding of legal concepts.
However, she ignored every negativities, motivated herself, and got encouragement from her roommates and friends. Omotayo’s perseverance paid off spectacularly as she earned 10 prestigious awards.
Omotayo believes her achievement is a testimony of God’s grace. She encourages aspiring law students to believe in themselves, strive for excellence, and trust in God’s guidance.
“I would advise them to always aim for the best and never let their mindsets limit them. More importantly, pray for God’s grace and mercy. My story should be an inspiration—if I could achieve this, you can too.”
Looking ahead, Omotayo hopes to find a legal field she is passionate about and make an impact beyond her immediate environment. With her determination and track record of success, she is undoubtedly on the path to greatness.
