AMERICA | A remarkable 17-year-old girl named Ashanti Nurse, from St. Louis, Missouri, has earned national recognition for completing over 200 hours of clinical experience, an achievement that even many college undergraduates have yet to accomplish.
Ashanti, a high school junior at Kairos Academy, in the United States is already making bold strides toward her lifelong dream of becoming a cardiac surgeon. Her journey is fueled by passion, discipline, and a clear sense of purpose that has guided her since childhood.
Ashanti's Story and How She Did It
Ashanti’s fascination with medicine began early. Inspired by the anatomy books her mother gave her as a little girl, she set her sights on fixing hearts, becoming a surgeon.
“At the age of three, she came to me and said, ‘Mom, I want to fix children’s hearts. She’s always been nurturing. If anyone’s sick, she’s the first to check on them and make sure they’re okay,” her mother recalled.
Determined to turn her dream into action, Ashanti spent her summer working two full-time jobs while logging over 150 clinical hours as a medical assistant at St. Luke’s Hospital’s cardiology department.

“I really did feel a part of the team. Every day was something new. I got to help perform EKGs, understand how they work, and learn directly from doctors. The patients were always supportive of my learning,” she said.
Her hands-on experience not only deepened her medical knowledge but also strengthened her resolve to pursue medicine at the highest level. Ashanti’s dedication and academic excellence have earned her national recognition.
She was recently selected as one of only 10 students nationwide for the Rising Leaders Initiative, a program that identifies and supports young changemakers who advocate for meaningful educational reform.
In addition, she received a certificate of participation from the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus, presented by State Senator Angela Mosley, honoring her exceptional contributions and leadership potential.
Beyond her clinical achievements, Ashanti has maintained an honor roll record since kindergarten, consistently earning awards for academic excellence.
With strong family and community support, she is now seeking full-ride scholarships to her top university choices, Stanford University or Johns Hopkins University—where she hopes to study medicine and specialize in cardiology.
