AMERICA | 18-year-old Anaiah Rucker has earned a reward for her act of courage.
She was awarded a full scholarship by Berry College, a private Christian liberal arts university in Mount Berry, Georgia, in recognition of her extraordinary bravery and resilience.
Anaiah's Story and How She Did It
Anaiah’s story began in February 2011, on what seemed like an ordinary school morning. The skies were cloudy, the roads wet, and Anaiah and her younger sister, Camry, were making their usual walk to school.
As they approached a busy crossing, visibility was poor, and before they could react, a truck came speeding toward them.
In a split second that would change her life forever, Anaiah saw the danger and instinctively pushed her sister out of harm’s way — but she herself was struck by the oncoming truck.
The accident left her critically injured, and she was rushed to the hospital, where she remained unconscious for two weeks. When she finally woke up, doctors informed her that she had lost her leg.

Despite the devastating setback, Anaiah’s spirit never faltered. After two months of rehabilitation at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, she began learning to walk again, this time with the aid of a prosthetic leg.
Her community rallied around her, celebrating her selflessness and courage. Ananiah’s story soon gained national attention when she was featured on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”, a show known for transforming lives.
The show not only helped her family build a new wheelchair-accessible home but also brought widespread support and admiration for her bravery.
It was through this national recognition that Berry College learned about Anaiah’s incredible act of heroism. Deeply moved, the university offered her a full scholarship,named the “Hero Scholarship,” honoring both her sacrifice and her determination to keep moving forward.
“I’m really thankful for that scholarship. When I got to high school, it encouraged me to start focusing. I knew that even though I had been awarded a scholarship, I still had to earn my place at Berry,” Anaiah shared.
True to her word, Anaiah worked hard academically and was admitted to Berry College, where she majored in Psychology and minored in Applied Behavior Analysis — a field inspired by her passion for helping others overcome adversity.
“I was fascinated by the idea of helping individuals thrive in challenging environments,” she said.
In 2023, Anaiah completed her bachelor’s degree, marking yet another milestone in her remarkable journey, from survivor to scholar, and from tragedy to triumph.
She is now heading to graduate school, pursuing a career in therapeutic and counseling psychology, determined to help others find healing just as she did.
