AFRICA | A brilliant lady, named Opeyemi Shonubi-Momoh, has achieved an exceptional academic milestone, earning a master’s degree in Adult Nursing with Distinction from the University of Dundee, United Kingdom, just seven years after she was called to the bar as a Lawyer in Nigeria.
Her inspiring journey from legal practice to becoming a registered nurse in another country is a powerful example of courage, reinvention, and scholarly excellence.
Opeyemi's Story and How She Did It
Opeyemi’s academic path started in 2013 when she enrolled at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria, to study Law (LLB).
After five years of rigorous training, she graduated in 2018 and immediately proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, where she completed the mandatory one-year professional programme for aspiring lawyers.
In 2019, she was called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
She began her legal career shortly after, working with law firms in Nigeria and building her professional experience. But quietly, another dream was unfolding, one far from the courtroom.

After relocating to the United Kingdom, Opeyemi decided to pursue a completely new path: Nursing. In 2022, she enrolled at the University of Dundee for a Nursing degree, beginning an intense three-year journey marked by hard work, self-doubt, and countless personal sacrifices.
Balancing study, clinical training, and a life in a new country tested her deeply. But her commitment remained unshaken.
She completed her Nursing studies and went further to earn a Master’s degree in Adult Nursing, graduating with Distinction in 2025, a remarkable academic feat in a demanding field.
Sharing her journey on TikTok, Opeyemi reflects the struggles and challenges she encountered during clinical practice, research, patient care, evidence-based learning, and advanced academic work.
“Three years of doubting if I could make it. Three years of betting on myself. Three years of nursing school testing every fibre in me. But as you all know… ‘actor no dey die for film.’”
She revealed that her success came with cycles of exhaustion and emotion: “I did it crying, angry, happy, sad, frustrated, and tired half the time. But in all seasons, giving up was never an option.”
Opeyemi dedicated her achievement to her mother, describing her as the silent strength behind every milestone: “The woman who borrowed money, sold her car, sold her jewellery, cried and wiped her own tears, and still prayed louder than anyone for my success.”
“She carried dreams that weren’t even hers so that mine could come true. Today I walked across that stage, but she’s the one who carried me there,” Opeyemi added.
Her tribute highlighted the deeply human side of her journey, sacrifice, love, and unwavering support. Standing tall after her achievement, she reintroduced herself with pride:
