AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian lady, Prisca Akaniro has shared her inspiring story of resilience and courage after she abandoned her studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where she spent three years stuck in her first year.
She went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, in just three years.
Prisca’s journey is a powerful example of what happens when determination meets opportunity.
Prisca's Story and How She Did It
Prisca initially enrolled at the University of Nigeria to study Computer Science. However, her dream was soon frustrated by the recurring Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strikes, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other institutional delays.
What was meant to be a four-year degree began to stretch indefinitely, and before long, Prisca had spent three full years in her first year without progress.
Her sister, Peppy, shared the story on Twitter, explaining that the family could no longer watch Prisca’s future waste away in uncertainty.
“My baby sister spent 3 years in 1st year at UNN thanks to Covid, ASUU strike, etc. By the third year, we couldn’t take it anymore and sent her to the UK for her B.Sc in Computer Science,” Peppy wrote.

Determined to rebuild her academic path, Prisca moved to the UK, where she enrolled at the University of Nottingham.
She began with an International Foundation Year, where she excelled and graduated with distinction, proving that her lost years in Nigeria had not dimmed her brilliance.
From there, she advanced into the university’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program, completing her degree in just three years, the exact amount of time she had been stuck at 100 level back home.
Celebrating her achievement, Prisca took to Instagram to celebrate her milestone, expressing deep gratitude to her family for their unwavering support throughout her journey.
“The day I graduated, I would choose my family again and again every time. I love them so much, and I am forever grateful to all of them,” she wrote.
Her story took an even brighter turn when, just three weeks after graduation, she received her first job offer in the UK, a fitting reward for her perseverance and hard work.
“She finished in 3 years, graduated 3 weeks ago, and got a job today,” her sister shared proudly.
