AFRICA | 79 years old, Patricia Sias Ellis has finally achieved her dream after she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Clayton State University in the United States, decades after putting her dreams on hold.
After graduating from high school, Patricia decided to choose a different path from what was considered the next step. Rather than heading straight to college, she focused on building a family and working toward a stable career.
She always believed she was not finished with school, but life moved forward. Patricia poured her heart into her home, raising a son and supporting her husband, both of whom later graduate from Morehouse College.
Yet, her own education remained a quiet longing in the background. But things changed about eight years ago when her son teased her about spending too much time watching soap operas and encouraged her to go back to school.

Patricia followed her son’s advise eventually. Soon after, she enrolled at Atlanta Metropolitan State College, then transferred to Clayton State University, taking one or two classes at a time.
“I just kept trudging along. Semester after semester, just doing the work.” ,” she said. However, her journey was not without setbacks.
Last year, doctors discovered a large tumor on her kidney—a 10-pound growth that posed a serious threat to her health. But even after undergoing surgery, Patricia refused to stop. She stayed committed, determined to finish what she had started.
Over the years, she became a familiar and beloved face on campus. Her energy, kindness, and perseverance left an impression on everyone she met.
According to Clayton State University President, Dr. Georj Lewis, her presence lit up every room. He believes that when she walks across the graduation stage, the entire crowd will rise—because she’s touched so many hearts.
For Patricia, returning to school in her seventies has been more fulfilling than she ever imagined. She found friendships, purpose, and a deep love for learning.
“These experiences I should have had at 19 or 20 years old, they are the same at 79 years old,” she said. “I’ve had the best time.”
Though she is graduating, Patricia is not done with school. Even though she has not decided her next step, she is considering a master’s degree. For now, she is focused on using her new knowledge to educate others about their rights and the justice system.
“I feel like the Lord is blessing me with the best years of my life,” Patricia said.
