AMERICA | A 52-year-old mother named Nikki Sandoval, has inspired many after returning to college years later and earning her Associate of General Studies degree with honors from Portland Community College, United States.
She achieved the success despite suffering the heartbreaking loss of her son just before graduation. Her journey is one of love, sacrifice, resilience, and determination.
Nikki's Story and How She Did It
Nikki first began college at the age of 27, but life responsibilities repeatedly interrupted her education. Determined to finally complete her studies, she pushed herself academically, completing 27 credits over two terms to secure her degree.
She was originally meant to graduate from college in 1995, but life took a different turn when she became a mother to her son, Michael. She chose to put her education on hold in order to raise her child, prioritizing motherhood over personal milestones.
Over the years, she started and stopped college multiple times, often stepping away whenever her son needed her support. In 2011, she even dropped out again to serve as Michael’s basketball team mom, fully dedicating herself to his growth and happiness.
Looking back, Nikki says her degree journey has always been rooted in love for her son.

But tragedy struck when, just one month before her graduation, Nikki lost her son. Her grief was overwhelming, and many people advised her to postpone or abandon her plans to graduate.
But Nikki chose to continue, honoring the dream she had long postponed. She walked across the graduation stage in tears, carrying both pride and heartbreak.
Reflecting on the moment, she shared that her son would have turned 30 years old this year, making the achievement even more emotional.
Her dedication paid off. Not only did she graduate with honors, but her hard work also earned her a full scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education, allowing her to continue her dream of becoming a teacher.
In addition, she has already secured employment with her local school district as an educational assistant while continuing her studies.
For Nikki, earning her degree represents more than academic success. It is a tribute to the son she loved and raised, and a reminder that it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams.
