AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian lady named Orofin Adedamola has achieved remarkable academic success after graduating with a First-Class degree (4.77/5.0 CGPA) in Information and Communication Technology at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA).
Her exceptional performance earned her the prestigious title of Best Female Graduating Student in the Faculty of Engineering (SEET).
Adedamola's Story and How She Did It
Adedamola began her university journey in 2018 with a dream of studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
However, she was offered Information and Communication Technology instead. While the change of course initially felt discouraging, she embraced the opportunity with determination.
Reflecting on her journey on LinkedIn, Adedamola shared that her first semester came with a setback: she earned a 4.09 grade point average, a result that left her feeling she had disappointed both herself and her family.
She recalled that a heartfelt conversation with her father motivated and encouraged her to push harder, and she ended the next semester with a 4.87 GPA, raising her CGPA to 4.48. It was then she realized that perseverance, combined with passion, creates excellence.
As her interest in Information and Communication Engineering deepened, Adedamola began exploring various tech fields. She connected with mentors who guided her growth.
Also, she immersed herself in web development, learning HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and further strengthened her hands-on experience through an internship at WeixelTech.
During the ASUU strike, instead of pausing her learning, she expanded her skill set by experimenting with new frameworks, backend tools, and sharpening her problem-solving abilities.
Her growth accelerated when she joined Doprax as an intern. Under the mentorship of Oluwaseun Ojeleye, she explored advanced technologies such as Vue.js, Django, and Docker. It was here she developed a strong passion for Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision.
She began taking specialized courses, studying and implementing algorithms such as K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN).
Using Python, she applied statistical and mathematical models to real-world problems—evidence of her deepening scholarly strength.
For her final-year project, Adedamola developed a cutting-edge system titled:
“Real-Time Attendance System using Facial Recognition (YOLOv10-N + FaceNet512 + Cosine Similarity).”
The project showcased her mastery of Machine Learning, AI, and Computer Vision, a scholarly achievement demonstrating innovation, technical depth, and problem-solving ability.
Balancing academics, internships, and self-development was not easy, but with the unwavering support of her family, friends, lecturers, and her faith in God, Adedamola persevered.
In 2024, she graduated with First-Class Honors, finishing with a brilliant 4.77 CGPA, and was named Best Female Graduating Student in Engineering.
Celebrating her milestone, she expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to her journey, especially her parents, mentors, and colleagues at Doprax.
She also shared her excitement for the future as she pursues opportunities in AI and Computer Vision, with an openness to further academic research and advanced studies.
