AFRICA | A determined Nigerian Lady finally wins full scholarship to UK university after suffering 40 rejections, celebrates exceptional achievement.
A determined Nigerian woman, Obiorah Jenifah, has achieved a remarkable milestone after persevering through numerous setbacks. She recently secured a fully-funded scholarship to study at SOAS University of London in the United Kingdom.
Jenifah, a graduate of the National Open University of Nigeria with a bachelor’s degree in Economics, earned an impressive 4.48 GPA, graduating with a Second Class Upper division. Despite her strong academic record, her journey to securing a scholarship was filled with challenges.
Sharing her story on LinkedIn, Jenifah revealed that she began applying for scholarships in 2023. Her initial applications for the UK Government’s Commonwealth Shared Scholarship and the Chevening Awards Scholarship were unsuccessful.

Undeterred, she applied for other opportunities, including the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Scholarship and scholarships at the University of Reading, which also rejected her.
However, some of her efforts yielded partial results. The University of East Anglia offered her a £5,000 partial scholarship, and she received admissions from the University of York and the University of Leeds, though without any financial aid.
Similarly, the University of Glasgow offered her a partial scholarship worth £4,000. Jenifah faced repeated rejections from several prestigious institutions and scholarship programs, including the University of Delaware, Rice University, Queen Margaret University, and the Schwarzman Scholars program.
She also applied for competitive opportunities like the Hungaricum Stipendum, the Erasmus Mundus programs, and the Australian Awards Scholarship, all of which declined her applications.
Even institutions such as the Free University of Berlin, Imperial College London, and the Romanian Government Scholarship turned her down.
Adding to her challenges, she experienced a waitlist situation with the Erasmus Mundus EGEI program and encountered a potential scam during her application for the Mozida Scholarship.
Despite these setbacks, Jenifah remained determined and continued her scholarship search for the 2024/2025 academic year. Her persistence finally paid off when she was awarded the Dr. Mai Yamani Scholarship at SOAS University of London.
This prestigious scholarship covers her full tuition fees and provides an annual stipend, allowing her to pursue her dreams in her desired field and country.
Expressing her joy, Jenifah wrote, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m rocking in London, UK finally on a fully-funded scholarship. I got a scholarship in my dream country after 40 scholarship rejections.
Jenifah’s story is a testament to resilience and perseverance. She encourages others facing similar struggles to keep striving for their goals.
