AFRICA | A brilliant lady named Mercy Fakude from South Africa has achieved remarkable success by earning a PhD in Plant Breeding from Iowa State University in the United States.
She completed her doctoral studies through the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship Program, which fully covered her tuition, accommodation, living allowance, visa, and travel expenses.

Mercy began her higher education at North-West University, South Africa, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy and Crop Science in 2015.

She furthered her studies at the same institution, earning a Master’s degree in Agronomy and Crop Science, with a specialization in Climate Change and Agriculture, in 2016.
Advancing her research passion, she pursued a second Master’s degree in Food Security at the University of Galway, Ireland, graduating in 2018.
Celebrating her achievement on LinkedIn, Mercy expressed her gratitude and excitement, describing this milestone as the culmination of an incredible journey and the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
Mercy’s research focused on developing a colchicine-free doubled haploid breeding protocol called Spontaneous Haploid Genome Doubling (SHGD) in maize.
This innovative approach aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of maize breeding, contributing significantly to advancements in agricultural science.
Mercy expressed heartfelt appreciation to her course advisor for his exceptional mentorship and to her committee members for their invaluable guidance throughout her academic journey.
She also extended gratitude to her family and friends, describing them as her “rock” during challenging times. ”Your love, encouragement, and steadfast belief in me provided the strength I needed to persevere, even during the toughest times,” she said.
As Mercy steps into the next phase of her career, she is eager to contribute to sustainable agricultural advancements and make a lasting impact in the field of plant breeding. ”Here’s to growth, innovation, and new opportunities,” she said.

Beyond academics, she embraced leadership and community service, serving in roles such as: Class Governor for the Legal Icons Set (2021–2024), NHEF Scholar (2023), recognized as one of the Top 100 Nigerian Talents by the Nigerian Higher Education Foundation.
Adanna was also the Head of Business Law, International Law Students Association, UI (2022), Financial Secretary, International Law Students Association, UI (2021) and Student Member, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, United Kingdom.
Her pursuit of excellence extended globally, earning certifications from institutions across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, including the Corporate Finance Institute (CFI), Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI), United States Institute of Peace (USIP), King’s College London, and the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI).
Professionally, Adanna gained hands-on experience as a Product Associate at Wakanow Group, working on AI projects, retention strategies, and digital transformation. She also volunteered at Design Week Lagos 2024, which broadened her perspective, and led as Team Captain for Team Innovation in the Shape the Future Challenge 2024 by Moonshot Pirates, solidifying her commitment to fostering creativity and collaboration.
“This journey has been as much about self-discovery as it has been about achievement,” Adanna said. “I look forward to more projects, learning opportunities, and ways to make a positive impact.”
