AMERICA | A 30-year-old woman, Nelsa Patrice Swann, has earned her Nursing degree from Coker University in the United States while raising two young children.
Additionally, Nelsa’s accomplishment is historic, as she is part of the first graduating class from Coker University’s Nursing program in South Carolina, United States.
Sharing her story on LinkedIn, Nelsa stated that she initially hesitated to return to school, believing she was too old to graduate and doubting her academic capabilities. Despite these concerns, she decided to pursue her degree.
However, she faced challenges in the course of the journey. Nelsa started the accelerated program while caring for a 3-year-old and later gave birth to her second child toward the end of her studies.

She described the challenges she faced, including being in and out of the hospital, nearly placed on bed rest, and eventually having to quit her nurse extern job.
Remarkably, she even took an exam while experiencing contractions, passed it, and returned to class just three weeks after giving birth. Nelsa noted that balancing motherhood, school, and work was difficult.
Nelsa juggled clinical rotations, working at a hospital and a hair salon, all while pregnant and often sick. At some point, she considered dropping out after seeing her grade point average drop.
However, her professors encouraged her to keep going, and in the next semester, she worked hard, brought her grades back up, and successfully earned her Bachelor of Nursing degree.
Nelsa expressed her gratitude for the support she received throughout her journey. She thanked her professors for pushing her to succeed, her father and brother for their financial support, and her parents for taking care of her children while she was in class, clinical, and preceptorship.
She also acknowledged her friends and nursing school sisters for their encouragement. Looking ahead, Nelsa said her next goal is to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become a certified and licensed nurse.
