AFRICA | A brilliant young Nigerian lady named Kehinde Oladeji has achieved remarkable success in the United States after earning her master’s degree and winning two prestigious academic awards for paper.
Kehinde completed her Master’s degree in Communication at Western Michigan University, where her academic excellence and creative contributions earned her major recognition within the university community.
Her journey shows that academic excellence and creativity can thrive together when driven by persistence, openness, and courage to evolve.
Kehinde's Story and How She Did It
Her academic journey began in Nigeria at the University of Ibadan, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Russian Studies in 2016.
After graduation, Kehinde did not immediately pursue further studies. Instead, she ventured into the creative industry, building skills and experience in communication and creative storytelling.
Having begun to build a strong professional portfolio, returning to school was not initially part of her plan. However, encouragement from her mother eventually pushed her to reconsider.
She later enrolled for a Postgraduate Diploma at the National Open University of Nigeria in 2023. Completing the program reignited her passion for academics.

With additional encouragement from her mentor, she began applying for study opportunities abroad.
Within months, she secured admission and a Teaching Assistantship offer at Western Michigan University, covering tuition while also providing a paid assistant lecturing position.
Reflecting on her experience, Kehinde shared on LinkedIn that her two years at the university’s School of Communication were deeply transformative, allowing her to create more than she ever had before.
She worked closely with professors who became mentors, guiding her understanding of academic excellence while nurturing her creative abilities.
Beyond classroom success, she interned with fast-growing organizations in digital marketing and communication and expanded her practical industry experience.
Her academic work also earned major recognition, as her research papers won both the Top Debut Paper Award and the Top Inclusive Scholarship Paper Award.
In addition, she was selected as a Frank Jamison Fellow, where she further developed her media production skills.
During her program, she learned videography, directed and produced two documentaries, created a spoken-word video project, and even organized her first film screening at the university’s School of Communication.
Kehinde admitted she once feared academia might limit her creativity. Instead, she discovered that academic training expanded her creative potential.
Sharing her reflections, she compared life’s opportunities to Play-Doh—flexible and moldable—explaining that success depends on how individuals shape the opportunities given to them.
