A brilliant young scholar, Akorfa Dagudu, has earned global recognition after securing the prestigious Schwarzman Scholarship to pursue her master’s degree in China.
Akorfa was selected as one of the new cohort of scholars under the Schwarzman Scholars program, which funds a one-year, fully funded master’s degree in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
The program is highly competitive, drawing thousands of applicants worldwide. This year alone, over 5,800 candidates applied, with only about 150 scholars selected from 40 countries and 83 universities, making Akorfa’s selection a remarkable achievement.
Her journey from humble beginnings in Ghana to studying at some of the world’s top institutions shows how determination, academic excellence, and clear purpose can open life-changing opportunities.
Akorfa's Story and How She Did It
Akorfa’s story began in Ghana, where she grew up in Agbogbloshie, an underprivileged area in Accra. Despite limited resources, her parents worked tirelessly to support her education.
Her academic brilliance eventually earned her a fully funded scholarship worth over $300,000 to pursue her undergraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
At MIT, she majored in chemical-biological engineering and focused her research on designing enzyme-based systems capable of breaking down plastics after use. Her work gained international recognition and earned her awards, including the CellPress Rising Scientist Award.

Beyond classroom success, Akorfa actively participated in research, entrepreneurship, and student leadership. She collaborated in research labs focused on sustainable materials, worked on start-up initiatives in Ghana, and engaged with communities supporting African students on campus.
Her experiences helped shape her long-term mission: to redesign materials so they remain environmentally friendly even after use.
According to Akorfa, much of her interest revolves around waste management and sustainable material production.
Since China remains a global manufacturing hub, studying there provides her the opportunity to combine research, policy, business, and entrepreneurship toward solving real-world environmental challenges.
She admits she initially applied without much expectation of success but was thrilled when she received the acceptance call, especially during a stressful exam period.
Reflecting on her journey, Akorfa encourages students not to underestimate themselves.
She notes that competitive academic environments can sometimes make students doubt their abilities, but stepping outside those spaces often reveals how much they truly know and can achieve.
Advising students who are also interested in the prestigious award, Akorfa urges them to apply without doubt and focus on the experience and not just winning. Apply anyway. Even going through the application and interview process can be a transformative experience,” she said.
With the Schwarzman Scholarship, Akorfa hopes to build a future where materials are designed responsibly from the start, reducing environmental damage and promoting sustainability globally.
