AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian woman named Husseinat Etti-Balogun has achieved remarkable success, earning a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering with honors from the Kyushu Institute of Technology (KyuTech), Japan, through a fully funded international fellowship.
Her achievement stands as a powerful example of how passion, consistency, and global exposure can turn a dream into a groundbreaking reality.
Husseinat Story and How She Did It
Husseinat’s academic journey began at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria, where she earned a Second Class Upper Division degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2023.
From her undergraduate years, she displayed a deep passion for space science and satellite technology.
At FUTA, she was an active member of the Space Club, a subsection of the Centre for Space Research and Applications (CESRA), and her involvement extended beyond the university
Husseinat became one of the community leads in the Microsoft Learn Student Ambassador (MLSA) program, helping organize major technology events like the Global Power Platform Bootcamp (GPPB), the largest MLSA event in West Africa.
Her dedication to space research did not stop there. Husseinat collaborated with the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), an international organization that supports young professionals in the space industry.
Through SGAC, she participated in international workshops, conferences, and technical presentations, all while completing her undergraduate studies in Nigeria.
In 2023, her efforts were rewarded when she won the United Nations/Japan Long-term Fellowship Programme, established by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Japanese Government, in cooperation with Kyushu Institute of Technology.
This prestigious fellowship, known as the Post-graduate Study on Nano-Satellite Technologies (PNST), is one of the most competitive programs in the world.
It selects a few students annually, up to three master’s candidates and three PhD candidates, from developing or non-spacefaring countries to study and conduct research in nano-satellite technologies.
Through this fully funded program, Husseinat earned her Master of Engineering in Aerospace, Aeronautical, and Space Engineering at KyuTech, graduating with honors.
During her time in Japan, she became known for her innovative work on software development for CubeSat systems, contributing to major international projects like the BIRDS Open Source Satellite Initiative, a collaborative space engineering program involving multiple countries.
Her research and technical input helped strengthen small satellite systems and enhance global collaborations in low-cost space technology.
Now, with her master’s degree complete, Husseinat is set to continue her academic pursuit by commencing her PhD at Kyushu Institute of Technology, furthering her research in space systems and satellite development.
