An exceptional 12-year-old boy named Viemens Bamfo has gained admission to the University of Ghana, Accra making him the youngest ever to enroll in the institution.

Bamfo is set to graduate from the institution with a degree in Public Administration. He is the youngest out of nearly 3,000 students who were enrolled at the The University of Ghana in 2019.

Bamfo’s father, Robert Bamfo told BBC that he has been tutoring his son for the past 3 years in various subjects which prepared him to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private students.

He passed the WASSCE examinations excellently which earned him the acceptance of the university. Bamfo was homeschooled by his father because of the financial constraints.

Bamfo is the second child in his family who went through home tuition from his father; his elder brother, Edwin Bamfo, who graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as an Environmental Scientist at the age of twenty.

“We used the Cambridge syllabus and the WASSCE syllabus so I understood some basic things about [them]…What I teach first is dictionary skills so that the child is able to pronounce every word correctly,” Bamfo said.

We do the phonetic skills and once that is done I teach Latin…for the sciences, I do not give notes,” he added. Bamfo stated that his father uses what his children like to teach them which is teaching by association.

Bamfo said he will be studying Public Administration at the University of Ghana Distance Education School adding that he aims to become the president of Ghana by age 40.

”I want to become the President of Ghana, I want to lift high the flag of Ghana and make Ghana a truly independent country like China, the US, Britain, and other countries,” he said.

He hopes to study constitutional law, the political systems of administration, principles of management, economics, and accounting. Bamfo said he is proud of his son and is not shocked by his early success since he has invested time and energy in providing him with what he needs to be exceptional.

“I have invested time and energy giving him the necessary essentials that will help him to take up the challenges and the associated opportunities that go with it. So I wasn’t shocked,” Bamfo said.

“Initially I had made my boy appreciate that he is not going to be defined by the law of averages, that he should be an outlier… That’s what he should strive for, and that calls for hard work and he is prepared to do it,” he added.
