AMERICA | An exceptional young boy named Caiden Spears has achieved remarkable success by becoming the youngest African American male to receive a Private Pilot License from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in New York, United States.
At just 17 years old, Caiden’s milestone is more than a personal achievement; it represents discipline, resilience, and a powerful breakthrough in an industry where representation has historically been limited.
Caiden's Story and How He Did It
Caiden’s journey into aviation began at the age of six while living in the Bronx, directly across the approach path from LaGuardia Airport.
After school, he would sit outside by the water and watch aircraft descend toward Runway 31, amazed at how clearly he could see their landing gear and the belly of the planes as they made their final turn.
From there, his curiosity became an obsession. At the age of 8, Caiden transformed his living room into a makeshift flight simulator using a yoke and controls that his mother purchased for him.
One afternoon, as his mother folded laundry, she heard realistic cockpit sounds coming from the TV.

From there, his mother knew that his passion was no longer about play. By age 13, Caiden completed his introductory flight at Republic Airport in Long Island and finished ground school with Aviation 4 US in Brooklyn.
Upon graduation from ground school, he received the Honors Award for Flying, a certificate of Merit from the New York State Assembly, and a certificate of Recognition from the New York State Senate
From there, he continued his flight training with Long Island Aviators in Farmingdale. At 14, he began structured flight training. In August 2022, shortly after turning 16, he completed his first solo flight, an unexpected day.
After several touch-and-go landings with his instructor in a Piper Warrior 161, the plane came to a full stop. Instead of ending the lesson, his instructor removed his seatbelt, stepped out of the aircraft, and said: “Bring my plane back in one piece.”
Suddenly, Caiden was alone on the runway, communicating directly with air traffic control. His mother, who had rushed back to the airport thinking something was wrong, stood watching nervously as he taxied, took off, and completed the solo flight with calm precision, with his voice over the radio steady. Confident.
While many teenagers focused solely on high school life, Caiden balanced rigorous aviation training with academic excellence at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx.
He graduated as an honors student in June 2024 and served as a “President’s Man,” a leadership role reserved for elite student leaders.
In July 2024, just one month after receiving his high school diploma, he officially earned his Private Pilot License, making history in New York State.
“17 years old. Five years later. 98 flight hours later. 54 flights later. Six cancelled checkrides later. Three instructors later. Still did it. God did,” he said, reflecting on the journey.
His words reveal the unseen side of achievement, cancelled exams, instructor changes, and nearly 100 hours of logged flight time before success finally came.
In August 2023, Caiden served as emcee for the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals Youth Day program in New Orleans, addressing over 400 students and pilots.
He is now enrolled in the American Airlines Cadet Academy and aims to become a commercial airline pilot by age 23, with the ultimate goal of captaining a Boeing 777.
