This 18-year-old boy won global awards for his AI and Finance inventions, earns $150,000 cash prize

An exceptional 18-year-old innovator, Okezue Bell, has earned global recognition and multiple awards for his groundbreaking work in Artificial Intelligence and financial technology.

His achievements recently secured him a $150,000 cash grant to further support his innovations. Bell’s journey is one of brilliance, purpose, and relentless curiosity — proving that age is no barrier to global impact.

Bell's Story and How He Did It

Bell invented Fidutam, a platform that uses blockchain technology to create funded bank accounts and digital identity systems for unbanked and low-income communities.

Fidutam aims to eliminate systemic barriers in traditional banking systems by building a decentralized financial infrastructure that promotes inclusion and accessibility.

The initiative has gained international attention, including recognition from SwissCognitive, for its impact in technology and finance. It also earned a 150,000 worth of grant for his innovation.

On his platform, Bell revealed that Fidutam has engaged with stakeholders and institutions including The White House, Google, Future of Life Institute, Chatham House, Brookings Institution and OpenAI.

Bell’s mission is to build systems that can positively impact one billion people worldwide. However, this genius did not begin at 18.

At just 16 years old in 2022, he invented WeArm, a low-cost, high-performance prosthetic arm designed to increase accessibility in developing communities.

The invention won over $80,000 in funding support and earned the prestigious International BioGENius Grand Prize.

Additionally, his scientific research has taken him to elite institutions, including Harvard Medical School and MIT Media Lab.

He was also selected as one of only 81 students globally to receive the RSI Scholar designation from MIT — one of the world’s most competitive high school research honors.

Bell’s entrepreneurial journey began in 9th grade through DECA, a business competition. There, he co-founded a graphic design venture focused on inclusive and ethnic design elements at affordable prices.

Although they did not initially reach the international stage, the experience taught him critical lessons in financial modeling, market validation, and product differentiation.

These early lessons later shaped Fidutam’s evolution, including a critical pivot from financial cybersecurity to financial equity, a bold move that ultimately strengthened the company’s direction.

Neuroscience, AI, and a Billion-Person Vision

Beyond fintech, Bell is deeply involved in neuroscience research, contributing to advancements in neurology through his work at Harvard and MIT.

“Take a chance, talk to people, be confident, and find something you’re passionate about,  the rest will fall into line,” he said, encouraging other young innovators across the world.

Bell’s long-term vision is to impact one billion lives by addressing systemic issues such as racial and economic inequality through technology and research.
