An exceptional young man named Festus Ohan has emerged successful after being abandoned by his father at the age of 13.
Festus Ohan struggled through the foster care system as his mother was diagnosed of schizophrenia when he was just four years. He was then left with his father who later abandoned him when he was 13 years old.
Narrating his story, Festus described his father’s abandonment as the worst period in his life. “I went to bed in tears, crying, praying, asking God, ‘Why did this happen to me?,” he said.
The young Festus Ohan rose to the challenges of having to go through eight foster care homes. “From that age until the age of emancipation, I had been at eight different foster homes and was distraught due to the abandonment of my father and my mother’s diagnosis of schizophrenia at the age of four,” he narrated.

During his time at the foster care homes, he discovered his passion for medicine and decided to chase his dreams. He narrated that his passion to become a doctor was met with skepticism as his foster parents were not in full support.
“Unfortunately, it was met with skepticism and doubt from various foster parents and I was told to have more realistic aspirations. Constantly hearing my foster parents throw statistics at me, about there’s only a 1 percent chance that a foster kid will even graduate college, let alone attend professional school, kind of impacted me in a way,” he added

Despite this, Festus continued to strive towards his goal and was eventually awarded a Full Scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles, where he finally earned a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience.
Following his Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Festus received several acceptance letters to schools such as Northwestern University, Columbia University, University of Texas, University Of Houston and even Cornell University to become a Medical Doctor.
“After various research projects, volunteering, and performing well in school I was ultimately given a full ride scholarship to attend medical school at UCLA. It was there that I found my desire to become an anesthesiologist and had gotten accepted to the residency program in UT Southwestern,” he said.
Festus finally joined the University of Texas UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas as a Medical Doctor. He expressed how pleased he is to take care of patients.
Overall, Festus hopes his triumph will inspire others never to give up on their dreams. “Never give up, really hold on to your dreams, because as long as you’re able to stick through it and persevere, you will accomplish your goals,” he said.
