Brilliant Nigerian man earns Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, 4 Masters and 1 PhD from UK university

A brilliant Nigerian man named Oluwatosin Babalola has achieved an exceptional feat after he bagged a bachelors degree in Mathematics, four master’s degrees and also earned his doctorate degree from the University of Bath in the United Kingdom.

Oluwatosin started his academic journey as a scholar at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria where he bagged his bachelors degree in Mathematics with a first class honors. He proceeded to earn a masters degree with distinctions in Mathematics with a focus on Numerical Analysis at the same university.

After he graduated, he went on to bag another masters degree at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) South Africa. Oluwatosin also bagged another masters degree in Financial Mathematics from the Pan African University, Institute for Basic Science, Technology and Innovation, Kenya.

He also earned an additional Master’s of Research (MRes) degree at the University of Bath, United Kingdom. Now, the academic scholar has earned his PhD at the same University of Bath, United Kingdom.

Throughout the academic journey, Oluwatosin also won different notable awards and scholarships. He was awarded a total of four scholarships from undergraduate through Ph.D.

Oluwatosin earned the MTNF scholarships during his undergraduate program, the Next-Einstein Initiative scholarship while at AIMS South Africa, the African Union Commission Scholarship at the Pan African University, and the EPSRC SAMBa scholarship for his programs in the United Kingdom.

He also won numerous awards during his Ph.D. program at the University of Bath including the Doctoral Recognition Award,. 


Oluwatosin was a three-time participant in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum, a forum where young promising researchers are invited to spend time with field medalists and prestigious award winners.

He mentioned that he did not achieve the feat without struggles and challenges. Oluwatosin stated that he faced skepticism from friends and family who did not understand his insatiable thirst for knowledge.

He said this situation led to strained relationships and limited communication with friends which made him homesick and isolated. Not discouraged by the misunderstanding from friends and family, Oluwatosin moved ahead focusing on his unwavering goal for an in-depth understanding of not just the theory of mathematics but its practical applications.

Oluwatosin has now won several travel grants for research visits to over 15 countries. He stated that he is now set to embark on a new career at the University of Georgia, United States where he will contribute to developing a mathematical model for the control of infectious diseases.
