How Faizah Jaji worked extra jobs to pay for her JAMB and went on to earn first-class degree in Accounting

AFRICA | A determined young Nigerian woman named Faizah Jaji has finally reaped the rewards of her resilience and hard work after graduating with a First Class Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Nigeria.

Faizah’s journey is one of resilience and determination to achieve her goal of earning a BsC.

Faizah's Story and How She Did It

After completing her National Diploma (ND), her original plan was to proceed with a Higher National Diploma (HND) and later pursue professional certification with ICAN.

However, advice from a senior about the realities of the job market pushed her to reconsider and attempt JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) again, the compulsory examination for Nigerian secondary school graduates seeking university admission.

With her parents initially refusing to fund the decision, Faizah took matters into her own hands. She secured an internship, saved money to pay for her JAMB registration, and studied one hour daily.

Her discipline paid off when she gained admission into Obafemi Awolowo University. “The joy my parents showed when I handed them the admission letter shocked me—they were elated,” she recalled.

Despite juggling academics, leadership responsibilities, and personal challenges, Faizah remained focused. There were moments of exhaustion and tears, but she pressed on—and graduated with First Class honours.

Throughout her time at OAU, Faizah held several leadership positions, including Assistant Class Governor, Financial Secretary, and Alumni Hall of Residence. Chairman, Electoral Committee of FIRSA and Academic Committee Member, MSSNOAU.

She was also an Audit Committee Member, MSSNOAU, Assistant General Secretary, The Tax Club, and President, The Tax Club

Beyond campus leadership, she completed her ICAN examinations in her 300-level first semester and went on to tutor at ICAN centres, further strengthening her technical expertise and professional confidence.
