AMERICA | 28-year-old Lady, Chantrell Frazier has made history as the first Black woman to earn a Doctorate in Biochemistry at Florida International University (FIU), United States.
Her achievement is not only historic but also deeply scholarly, rooted in years of rigorous research, resilience, and a strong academic foundation built from her earliest days in higher education.
Chantrell's Story and How She Did It
Chantrell’s academic journey started at Savannah State University, a historically Black College and University (HBCU), where she graduated as a student-athlete.
She often describes Savannah State as the institution that shaped her readiness for graduate school, giving her the confidence and strength needed to excel in spaces where Black women remain underrepresented.
“It prepared me not to falter. It prepared me, when things got difficult, not to quit,” she said, reflecting on the support system and sense of belonging she found at her alma mater.
Moving from an HBCU to a large public university came with challenges, from cultural differences, limited representation, and increased pressure.
Yet, her passion for forensic science, discovered during her undergraduate years, became the driving force that kept her pushing forward. Even without realizing it, Chantrell was making history while pursuing what she loved.
“I didn’t know how far I would go. I just took it as far as I could,” she said. Her PhD research at FIU focused on the biology and chemistry of human body odors to improve forensic identification.
She uncovered significant findings, including how gender influences body odor signatures, a discovery with potential to make forensic investigations more accurate.
Chantrell also explored whether mosquitoes are attracted to specific human odor profiles. She planned to present this work in Tanzania as part of her dissertation outreach, hoping her research would one day help exonerate wrongfully accused individuals through improved scientific methods.
After her PhD, Chantrell will continue her scholarly journey through a postdoctoral teaching fellowship at Framingham State University in Massachusetts, where she intends to build a career as a chemistry professor.
Her long-term goal is to guide and inspire the next generation of STEM scholars, especially students who may not see themselves represented in scientific spaces.
“It’s about being an example and showing them that the ceiling is open. I feel like I’ve broken a lot of glass ceilings with what I’ve done,” Chantrell said.
