A brilliant Nigerian man named Abubakar Ismail has emerged as the best graduating medical student of Bayero University Kano (BUK)after an outstanding academic performance.
He earned the honour after completing his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree with distinctions and receiving several prestigious awards.
Abubakar's Story and How She Did It
Abubakar began his medical journey in 2019 at Bayero University Kano. He resumed at the university simply as a student, without any specific plan of becoming the best graduating student.
However, through years of discipline, consistency, and hard work, he maintained excellence despite the demanding nature of medical training. By the end of the programme, he graduated with distinctions and emerged as the top medical graduate of the 2023 set.
In addition to being named the overall best graduating medical doctor, Abubakar also received awards for Best in Biochemistry, Best in Medicine and Best in Surgery.
These recognitions reflect his strong academic ability across both pre-clinical and clinical courses.

Beyond the classroom, Abubakar remained active in student leadership and professional development.
During his time in school, he served as Former National President & Vice President, Katsina Medical Students Association, Director of New Media, Nigerian Medical Students Association
Northwest Director of Academics, Quiz & Information, Deputy Director, SCOPE, Fellow of FAMP & YLCP and YOLHAC Champion.
Sharing his gratitude, Abubakar credited his achievement to faith. “This is from the bounty of my Lord. The grace of Allah—He gives it to whom He wills,” he wrote on X.
“I came into medical school as a student… As I close this chapter and step out as a medical doctor, permit me to reintroduce myself — shaped by challenges, strengthened by grace, and carried this far only by Allah’s mercy,” he added.
Abubakar’s story is a powerful reminder that excellence is possible through dedication, humility, and consistency.
