AFRICA | An exceptional Nigerian boy named Aminu Sanni has made history as Nigeria’s youngest Commercial Pilot at just 18 years old.
He achieved this remarkable milestone after earning a United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Commercial Multi-Engine Pilot License from Phoenix East Aviation (PEA) in Florida, one of the top aviation schools in the world.
Aminu’s feat is even more outstanding as he completed the entire program in just 10 months, passing every stage of training without a single checkride failure, a rare achievement, even among experienced trainees.
His journey reflects a powerful combination of discipline, focus, and resilience.
Aminu's Story and How He Did It
Born and raised in Abuja, Nigeria, Aminu’s dream of flying started at a young age. While his peers were fascinated by games and gadgets, he was captivated by aircraft, and he developed a passion for flying.
He completed his High School Diploma at Al-Hidaayah Academy, before advancing to The Regent College, Abuja, where he graduated with Distinction in Economics Foundation.
His strong academic foundation, combined with his analytical mindset, proved essential in his aviation training, where precision and decision-making skills are paramount.

At Phoenix East Aviation, Aminu was trained under diverse and challenging conditions, including night flights, cross-country missions, and instrument-rated navigation through rain, fog, and low visibility.
He logged over 50 flight hours on multi-engine aircraft such as the PA-34-200 Seneca and accumulated more than 30 hours of cross-country flight time, demonstrating the technical competence and situational awareness required of professional pilots.
One of his instructors described him as “a model of consistency and professionalism far beyond his age.”
“Aminu’s journey reflects the strength and potential of Nigerian youth. Completing this program without a single checkride failure shows remarkable focus and maturity,” the instructor said.
Reflecting on his achievement, Aminu said he is proud to be living in his childhood dream and seeing his hardwork pay off.
“Becoming a pilot has always been my childhood dream, and today I am proud to say I’m living that dream and enjoying every step of the journey. It’s been an incredible experience filled with hard work, discipline, and passion.”
He added that he hopes his story encourages other young Nigerians to chase their dreams fearlessly:
“I hope my story inspires others to pursue what they love with determination and never give up on what they believe in.”
With his FAA Commercial Pilot License (AMEL) now secured, Aminu is setting his sights on joining a leading international airline, where he hopes to gain global experience, continue learning, and proudly represent Nigeria among the world’s elite aviators.
“My dream doesn’t end here. This is just the beginning. I want to keep flying higher, keep learning, and make Nigeria proud,” he said.
