AMERICA | A 37-year-old American astronaut, Jessica Watkins, has made history as the first Black woman to live in space for 182 days, spending six months aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Her achievement marks a groundbreaking moment for diversity and inclusion in space exploration, and her story reflects a lifetime of academic brilliance, perseverance, and passion for science.
Jessica's Story and How She Did It
Jessica grew up in Lafayette, Colorado, where her fascination with space began at a young age. In grade school, she even wrote a poem titled “My Little Astronaut,” dreaming about what it would be like to live among the stars.
That childhood dream later came to pass after years of hard work, study, and determination. Her academic journey began at Stanford University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Initially drawn to the field because she thought it was the right path toward becoming an astronaut, but Jessica soon realized that her true passion lay elsewhere.
“It just wasn’t something that got me out of bed every morning,” she shared in a NASA broadcast from space.
While exploring Stanford’s course catalog, she discovered geology and everything changed. The idea of studying the surfaces of other planets fascinated her.
“Particularly the idea of planetary geology, the idea of being able to study rocks on the surface of another planet, just absolutely enamored me and still does to this day,” she said.
She proceeded to pursue her Ph.D. in Geology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she researched the surface processes on Mars and collaborated with NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover team.
Her work earned her recognition as one of the brightest young minds in planetary science, and opened the door to the astronaut program.
In 2017, Jessica was selected as part of NASA’s highly competitive astronaut class, one of the most diverse in the agency’s history. After two years of rigorous basic training and two more years of specialized preparation, she was finally assigned to the SpaceX Crew-4 mission, which launched in April 2022.
During her six-month stay aboard the ISS, she became not only the first Black woman to join a space station expedition but also a role model for countless young scientists around the world.
While in orbit, Jessica contributed to hundreds of research projects, including experiments on plant growth in microgravity. Her work helped scientists better understand how to grow food in space — a vital step toward future long-term missions to the Moon and Mars.
Reflecting on her time aboard the ISS, Jessica said the experience was both humbling and transformative.
“It’s this exciting combination of emotions as you’re sitting there on the rocket getting ready to launch. But once you’re up there, you realize you’re part of something much bigger than yourself,” she said.
Beyond the science, Jessica also emphasized the importance of teamwork and international cooperation, as her mission included collaboration with a Russian cosmonaut.
As a member of NASA’s Artemis program, Jessica is now among the group of astronauts who could one day travel to the Moon — and possibly Mars. She stated that her dream to be able to walk on Mars and study its surface firsthand.
“To go to those areas that I’ve studied through data and finally get boots on the ground — that would be incredible,” Jessica said.
Jessica continues to advocate for diversity and representation in the sciences. She often credits trailblazers like Dr. Mae Jemison, the first Black woman in space, as inspirations who showed her what was possible.
“It’s important for me to reach out and connect with the community I hope to represent,” she said. “Dreaming big and finding your passion — that’s what it’s all about.”
