He expressed his honor in receiving these scholarships, noting the Tetley and Lupton Scholarship is highly competitive, with only five awards available to international students, while the Masters of Excellence Scholarship offers just fifteen.

These recognitions have not only validated his hard work and dedication but also reinforced his passion for advancing in geotechnical engineering. However, Tochukwu’s journey to this point was not without challenges.

In 2021, he joined EducationUSA and applied to seven colleges in the United States, along with other global scholarships.

While he was accepted into all programs, none provided funding. He learned that most funding is typically allocated to doctoral students, prompting him to refine his profile in 2022 and intensify his application efforts.

He applied to about fifteen colleges in the United States including four doctoral programs and several master’s programs. Although he faced rejection from one PhD program, he received acceptances from three and several master’s programs, still without funding.

After years of watching others achieve their academic goals, Tochukwu felt emotionally drained. However, his participation in the EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program rekindled his hope and inspiration.

In 2023, he applied to Virginia Tech University and the University of Leeds, gaining acceptance to both with full funding. Tochukwu attributes his success to his determination and the grace of God.

He encourages others to remain determined, noting that a mindset of impossibility can hinder future aspirations.

Tochukwu expressed gratitude to the EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program for its invaluable resources and support, emphasizing that his achievement would not have been possible without their guidance.

Looking ahead, Tochukwu aims to make the most of this opportunity by engaging deeply in research and collaborating with brilliant minds at the University of Leeds.

He is eager to leverage the skills and knowledge he gains to contribute meaningfully to the field of geotechnical engineering, particularly in addressing global challenges related to sustainable infrastructure and environmental resilience.

Tochukwu is grateful to the scholarship committees and the University of Leeds for this life-changing opportunity and looks forward to the journey ahead.
