Twin sisters, Iman and Imari Anderson, who lost their mother during their studies, overcame their challenges to graduate from Huffman High School in the United States.
With Imari as Top 2 and Iman as Top 4, their grade point average(GPA) was higher than 4.0, which earned them a full-ride scholarship at Troy University.
The Anderson Twins, from Birmingham, Alabama achieved this success despite facing a tragic loss in their last year of high school, a show of resilience and perseverance.
The Anderson Twins Story and How They Did It
The twin sisters lost their mother, Xaveria Powell Anderson, in 2016 when a tragic house fire claimed her life. They were only teenagers at the time, and the grief could easily have derailed their education. Instead, it became the fuel that pushed them forward.
“I remember asking, ‘Why me? Why at this time?’”Imari said. For Iman, her mother’s last words still echo in her heart: “The walls look like they’re caving in,” before the call dropped.
Despite the pain, the twins made a promise to themselves, nd to their late mother, that they would not become another statistic. “We decided to keep pushing, to keep going, because that’s what she always did for us,” Imari said.

Against the odds, both sisters excelled academically and were awarded for it, a moment they described as both surreal and humbling. Their Father, Kerry Anderson, praised them for how much they pushed through despite the odds.
“You know, I could hold both of them in my hands at one point in life because they were premature babies. And look at them now,” Kerry proudly said.
At Troy University, the twins pursued their bachelor’s degrees in Social Work and graduated in 2021.
As students, the Anderson twins supported themselves by selling clothes and hair extensions out of their grandmother’s living room. That small side hustle grew into something bigger, and by 2018, they launched their own companies, The DoubleTake Boutique and Iman Hair Extensions.
In 2022, they combined to open Double Beauty, now one of Birmingham’s premier one-stop glam shops, offering beauty and non-surgical services.
The twins stated that balancing academics, grief, and entrepreneurship was not easy. They faced financial strain, emotional struggles, and a lot of demands as college students. But they remained resilient and were still able to graduate with good grades.
“Resilience has been everything for us. No matter what came our way, we found a way to push through,” Iman said.
Today, the Anderson twins stand as living proof that tragedy does not have to define one’s destiny. They look at their academic excellence, scholarships, and their successful business as tributes to their late mother.
“We did this for you, mama,” Iman said.
