AFRICA | An exceptional African lady named Maud Chifamba has achieved an extraordinary academic feat, earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the prestigious Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
This achievevment follows her rare remarkable academic records of bagging a Bachelor’s degree at the young age of 19 and Master’s at 21.
Maud's Story and How She Did It
Maud’s story is one of resilience, intelligence, and purpose. Born into a poor family in Zimbabwe, her journey to global academic excellence was not smooth.
She lost her father at the age of five and her mother at thirteen, leaving her orphaned and struggling to access quality education. Yet, her brilliance was evident early on and she was once mistakenly given an examination meant for a higher grade which she passed it with outstanding results.
Despite the odds, Maud fought her way to success. At just 14 years old, she gained admission into the University of Zimbabwe, where she studied Accountancy
By the age of 18, she had graduated as one of the university’s youngest-ever graduates. Determined to go further, she earned her Master of Science in Accountancy from the same institution at age 21.
Her exceptional academic record and leadership potential earned her a $155,000 scholarship to pursue her MBA at the Wharton School of Business, one of the top finance schools in the world.
During her two-year program, Maud received additional merit-based fellowships and scholarships from Goldman Sachs and The Wharton Student Experience Fund, bringing her total funding to over $210,000.
Reflecting on her journey, Maud shared how surreal the experience has been: “This week marks the conclusion of my MBA, which is my second master’s degree — except this time, it’s an MBA from the best finance business school in the world.
She expressed that, from being a young teen who walked 8km to school, writing on her knees because there were no desks, and once sleeping at a railway station when she was homeless, the achievement is beyond her wildest dreams.
While at Wharton, Maud achieved several notable milestones, including earning dual majors in Finance and Business Economics & Public Policy, a summer Internship at Goldman Sachs, and fulfilling her long-time dream of working on Wall Street.
She was also opportuned to study abroad at London Business School, be a career fellow of Investment Banking, where she mentored other MBA students, and an Admissions Fellow, helping to evaluate profiles for future Wharton students
Grateful for her achievements, she shared her life verse from Ellen G. White, saying: “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history.”
With her new milestone, Maud hopes to make an impact in finance and public policy — and perhaps, as she humorously added, “maybe one day, become Zimbabwe’s Minister of Finance.”
