A determined man named Joseph Gabe Sonnier has achieved an extraordinary life milestone, rising from a janitor to become the principal of the very school where he once mopped floors for 27 years.
His inspiring story is one of perseverance, faith, and the belief that it is never too late to chase your dreams.
Gabe's Story and How He Did It
Gabe’s journey to this achievement began in 1985 at Port Barre Elementary School in Louisiana, where he worked as a janitor to support his family.
After his parents separated, he faced several challenges, taking on different jobs in construction, grocery stores, and sawmills to help his mother pay the bills.
Eventually, he became a cleaner at Port Barre High School. He recalled that he resumed the job with plans to leave after a few years.. “When I first started, it was my intention to work five, maybe ten years as a janitor and then look to do something else,” he said.
However, his path took a different turn when the school’s then-principal, Westley Jones, pulled him aside for a conversation that would alter the course of his life.
He said, ‘Being a janitor is a good and honest job. “‘But I see unlimited potential in you. I think you’d benefit students more as an educator. I’d rather see you grading papers than picking them up,’” Gabe recounted.
Inspired by those words, Gabe made a bold decision to return to school and earn a degree, even while working full-time as a cleaner. He enrolled at Louisiana State University Eunice, where he later graduated in 2006 with an Associate’s Degree in General Studies.
University was not easy as he balanced his studies with his cleaning work, and barely had a little rest, but he persevered. Determined to keep pushing forward, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Louisiana in 2008.
His dedication did not stop there. Gabe became a teacher, and through hard work and commitment, completed his Master’s Degree in Science and Education.
In 2013, after nearly three decades of service at Port Barre Elementary, Gabe’s story came full circle when he was appointed principal of the same school he had cleaned for years.
Reflecting on his journey, he said: “Who would have thought 33 years ago, when I first set foot on this campus, that I’d eventually become the leader of this school?”
Gabe’s journey proof that education truly has the power to transform lives. He stated that his years of study, discipline, and persistence showcase the essence of lifelong learning and determination.
Today, as principal, Gabe not only leads with empathy and humility but also inspires both his staff and students to dream beyond their circumstances. Many of his colleagues have followed his example, pursuing higher education and even master’s degrees.
“Don’t let your current situation define what you’ll become later, it’s not where you start—it’s how you finish,” he advises.
