AFRICA | After decades of a successful career in journalism, a 68-year-old Ghanaian media icon named Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie has fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer.
For many years, Gifty was a household name in Ghanaian journalism. As the first female Vice President and later President of the GJA, a position she held for seven years, she made significant contributions to media freedom, ethics, and leadership in the country.
Yet, even with an accomplished career, she never gave up on her dream of practicing law.
Gifty's Story and How She Did It
Gifty began her higher academic journey at the Ghana School of Journalism before earning a Master’s degree in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
In 2019, she made a bold move, enrolling at the University of London to pursue a Law degree, marking the start of a new chapter.
Upon completing her law degree, she proceeded to the Ghana School of Law for her post-call training. Despite the challenges of returning to academic life at her age, Gifty’s determination never wavered.

In 2025, her perseverance paid off when she was called to the Bar, officially becoming a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana, a milestone she described as a “testament to the goodness of God.”
Celebrating her achievement on Facebook, Gifty shared that her journey was relentless, passionate, and vision-driven, and she did not let age stop her.
“Celebrating the goodness of God for the opportunity to live my lifelong dream. My journey has been relentless, passionate, and vision-driven. Age should never be a barrier to success, and neither should your gender,” she wrote.
She shared that her experience was filled with moments of self-doubt and difficulty, yet faith and persistence carried her through.
“Through Christ who strengthens us, we have the power to create the life we want. I am living proof of His goodness. Keep pushing! Keep striving! Here’s to many more moments of triumph and praise. To God be the glory,” she said.
In an interview following her induction, Gifty highlighted how her legal education would further empower her to contribute to Ghana’s democratic development, particularly in media law, governance, and human rights.
“Age and gender should never hinder one’s path to success. I hope my story inspires other women — young or old — to chase their dreams with passion and purpose,” she remarked.
