How Timothy Harrison attended his graduation through co-workers’ donations and later won university scholarship

Another co-worker, Shantana Blevins, echoed the same concern. “I thought you were supposed to graduate today. What do we need to do?” she asked.  And what followed that moment was an extraordinary act of compassion from his co-workers.

The Waffle House staff paused their work, pooled their own money, and sprang into action. They bought Timothy new dress clothes,  slacks, a shirt, and a tie, and rushed to his high school to secure his cap and gown.

When Timothy finally put everything on, the moment felt surreal. “When I put on those clothes, it was a different feeling. I don’t even know how to describe it. A million dollars? It was the best feeling,” he said.

With time running out, Blevins personally drove him 20 miles across town to the Birmingham CrossPlex, ensuring he arrived just in time to walk across the stage.

“Seeing his face afterward, that was priceless,” she said. What could have ended as a quiet, missed milestone instead became a powerful moment of dignity and triumph.

Soon after, Timothy’s story went viral, touching hearts far beyond Alabama. Then came another life-changing turn: Lawson State Community College offered him a full scholarship, covering both tuition and books.

“I really didn’t expect that to happen,” Timothy said. Now, the teenager who once thought he had no path forward is preparing to attend college, with a future suddenly full of possibilities.

“To know that I have a path to go somewhere — that’s something new,” he shared. His manager believes one simple decision changed everything. “Now he can go to college and figure out what he wants to do in life, and we’re going to help guide him,” Hampton said.
