AFRICA | An exceptional Nigerian medical doctor named Segun Afolajimii has won the prestigious Gates Scholarship to pursue a PhD at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Segun began his journey to medicine at the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) with a remarkable distinction grade.
His outstanding performance also earned him the award of best-graduating student in 2019—both in his class and in the university’s College of Medicine.
Despite his academic excellence, Segun faced challenges throughout his educational journey. Coming from a financially average background, he attributes his success to his family’s unwavering support and the sacrifices they made to ensure he reached his full potential.

”I am forever indebted to all those who have contributed to my growth, some of whom I do not even know. I am grateful to my family for making sure I got an education even when my background meant it could easily have been otherwise,”he said.
After completing his medical degree, Segun continued his academic pursuit at the University of Oxford, where he earned a Master’s degree in Integrated Immunology through the Clarendon Scholarship—another highly competitive and prestigious award.
During his time at Oxford, he continued pushing the boundaries of his expertise, focusing on cancer research and exploring groundbreaking medical innovations.

His hard work paid off—he was awarded the Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue a PhD in Cancer Immunology, an area of research that holds promise for revolutionary advancements in cancer treatment.
Beyond academics, Segun is passionate about mentorship and empowerment. He is the Co-founder of Ganglion Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) focused on career development, entrepreneurship, and capacity building for young professionals.
Advising aspiring medical students, he emphasized the importance of dedication, networking, and seizing opportunities.
”But my advice to current students is to actively seek and make the most of opportunities. Furthermore, I encourage that they build meaningful rapport with colleagues and faculty to foster growth and lifelong relationships,” he said.
