A brilliant African lady named Charity Bhebhe has won the prestigious Gate Scholarship to study for her doctorate at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
Charity graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar. She was awarded prestigious Gates scholasrhip for her PhD.
“I am very excited, and I am proud of myself. I am also very thankful to everyone who helped me with the application, especially my advisers, professors, and my mentor and principal investigator Dr. Heather Bean for all the guidance and support. I wouldn’t have done it without their help,” she said.
Charity stated that she would be using the scholarship to study for a doctorate in Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge. She is among 92 winners across the world to receive the scholarship.

Charity said growing up in Zimbabwe, she experienced firsthand the lack of basic resources to treat even minor illnesses which influenced her decision to study the molecular mechanisms of diseases.
She added that she died in hopes of someday successfully making a difference in the world of health care and disease prevention. Charity said she had the opportunity to interact with people from people from diverse backgrounds because of the international community at the university.
“It has always been my goal to be able to apply my medical research skills in investigating and preventing diseases to improve health care standards and give people from disadvantaged communities like my own a fair chance to fight against disease,” Charity said.
“I intend to use my training in pharmacology to continue researching molecular and cellular systems involved in disease progression and, consequently, develop therapies for human disease,” she added.
Charity mentioned that her goal is to be able to apply her medical research skills in investigating and preventing diseases to improve healthcare standards.
