AMERICA | A brilliant young girl named Jenna Smith, a student of Duke University has been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, granting her the opportunity to pursue two fully funded master’s degrees at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Jenna was selected as one of 32 recipients from a highly competitive pool of 865 applicants across the United States.
The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the most esteemed awards globally, covering full tuition, a living stipend of £18,180 per annum, and additional benefits such as a settling allowance, health insurance, visa costs, and two economy flight tickets to and from the United Kingdom.

Duke University President Vincent E. Price praised Jenna’s remarkable achievements, emphasizing her impact both academically and beyond.
“Jenna Smith is an exceptional thinker, leader, writer, and reformer. During her studies at Duke, she has been deeply involved in restorative justice through leadership, journalism, and civic engagement,” Vincent said.
”I am delighted she has been selected for the Rhodes Scholarship, and I look forward to all she will accomplish during her time at Oxford and beyond,” he added.
Smith is currently pursuing a degree in International Comparative Studies with a minor in Journalism and Media as a Robertson Scholar at Duke University.
Beyond academics, she has taken on numerous leadership roles and advocacy efforts, including serving as the Duke Justice Project, where she and her team partnered with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Division of Juvenile Justice to organize a leadership development summer camp for youth.
She has also collaborated with notable organizations like the Innocence Project, the Delta Center for Culture and Learning in Mississippi, and the Wilson Center for Science and Justice.
Smith’s passion for criminal justice reform extends into education and journalism. She serves as a co-instructor of a House Course on correctional systems and the re-entry process and as a facilitator at Restorative Justice Durham, focusing on restorative practices within communities.
Her journalistic achievements are equally impressive, having reported for the Chicago Tribune and the 9th Street Journal, where she has consistently demonstrated a commitment to amplifying marginalized voices and driving meaningful change.
At Oxford, Smith plans to pursue two master’s degrees, a master’s in Criminology and Criminal Justice and master’s in Comparative Social Policy
Smith’s ultimate goal is to relocate to the Mississippi Delta, where she plans to practice law and work toward substantial reforms in the criminal justice system.
