Young man wins Teacher of the Year Award in US, sets record

A young man named D’Shawn Washington has won the Teacher of the Year Award in Lexington Massachusetts in the United States.

Washington is a fourth-grade teacher at Maria Hastings Elementary School in Massachusetts, United States who was named the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year for his commitment and dedication.

He also made history as the as the first Black man to receive the state’s highest honor for educators.  Washington is an active member of the Lexington Education Association.

“As a teacher, advocate, student, and a cultivator of young changemakers, it is my duty to continuously learn how to empower my students to not only master grade-level standards but to be upstanding individuals with the capacity to ignite change in their communities,” he said.

The Massachusetts Secretary of Education,  Patrick Tutwiler said Washington was recognized for fostering inclusivity, advocacy, and growth in his students. He said the state is grateful  for educators like him, who dedicate their time to students every day.

In another story, a young Nigerian woman named Adefemi Adeola Adedunke has bagged 6.5 million naira and training in the United Kingdom after winning the Teacher of the Year award.

Adefemi Adeola is a teacher at Keke Senior High School, Agege, Lagos who won the 9th edition 2023 Maltina Teacher of the Year competition. She was rewarded with a cash prize of 6.5 million naira. Rea more HERE.
