Determined African man sponsors himself to university with money gained from riding motorcycle, bags first-class degree in Sociology

A determined young African man named Sylvester Bekyellu who sponsored himself through school by working as a motorcycle rider has finally bagged a Sociology degree with first-class honors at the University of Ghana, Accra.

Sylvester is a Ghanaian whose journey to earning a tertiary education was filled with challenges. Narrating his story in an interview with News Central, he shared that his family faced hardships when his father passed away when he was 17 years old.

He stated that he moved to Accra from his village in the West region in search of better opportunities, Upon getting to Accra, Sylvester said he faced the challenges of homelessness and he had to sleep in a rail way station at night.

He said the railway security offered him a mosquito net and he managed there with his son until he was robbed. Sylvester said to survive, he did different menial jobs including working as a bricklayer and salesboy.

Sylvester mentioned that because he was always lifting heavy items, he developed abdominal pain however he did not give up, he persevered and kept working. He said it was in the course of his hustling that he met a policeman who encouraged and advised him.

He said the Policeman advised him to further his education and told him to start work as a motorcycle rider popularly known as Okada to sponsor himself through the university.

With the savings from his gain as an Okada rider, Sylvester enrolled in the University of Ghana for a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Sociology. He juggled the Okada business with his studies at the university.


Sylvester maintained academic excellence and his hard work paid off. He graduated from the University of Ghana with first-class honors. His colleagues at his Okada park said they are proud of his achievement adding that he inspired them.

The colleague mentioned that Sylvester persevered through the academic journey noting that he was juggling both at the same time and even though he was involved in an accident in the course, he still pushed through.

Sylvester stated that his achievement proves that one is never too old to chase their dream adding that one’s background should not stop one in life. He said that he aspires to become a Lawyer in the future.
