Young African lady survives cancer, bags bachelors degree in Accounting

A young lady named Monica Sithole has successfully bagged a bachelor’s degree in Accounting at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa despite battling cancer.

Monica, a South African native bagged her bachelor’s degree in Accounting at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. She also earned Cumulative Translation Adjustment (CTA) In Accounting at the same university.

She was diagnosed with stage 4 hematological blood cancer at the age of 22 according to Women Power Africa. She stated that she immediately had to start treatment as her diagnosis was life-threatening.

“I felt defeated because my diagnosis process was such a struggle with biopsies that kept coming back inconclusive, so by the time of my diagnosis I had already accepted my fate that I was about to embark on a life-changing journey,”she said.

Monica said she had four different chemotherapy treatments which includes doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacin. She stated that she was anxious about whether she would have to go for radiation treatment afterward to burn off any residual cancer cells.

“Chemotherapy was already exhausting enough on its own, and I didn’t want to go through another rollercoaster of a journey, being radiation,” she said.

Monica underwent 12 chemotherapy sessions, 5 scans, and 4 surgeries, she was officially declared cancer-free.  and was officially declared cancer-free after 9 months. She mentioned that she kept her condition to herself but after her treatment, she was ale to share her condition.



“I kept asking myself about how I could use what I went through to help others. I was also trying to recover mentally and physically from the trauma I experienced before and during the treatment. Hence I am only comfortable talking about it now,” she said.

She stated that her parents provided her with the biggest support that gave her the biggest inspiration to keep going amid the condition. Monica mentioned that she is feeling unstoppable and she is ready to pursue every of her dream.
