AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian lady named Kaitochukwu Chukwudi emerged as the best graduating student in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria.
She earned her bachelor’s degree with First-Class Honours, becoming the department’s first female graduate to achieve such a feat in over 15 years.
Kaitochukwu’s outstanding academic record has earned her the prestigious Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to pursue her postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

The Mastercard Scholarship is a fully-funded scholarship that covers tuition, accommodation, living stipends, books, a laptop, and travel costs. The application for the 2025 cohort is currently open, with a deadline in January 2025. For more information, check HERE.
In addition to her departmental honors, Kaitochukwu also received the award for Best Female Graduating Student in the Faculty of Engineering at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
Reflecting on her achievements, she shared her excitement and gratitude on LinkedIn. She expressed pride in the years of hard work and resilience that culminated in these awards, stating:
”What fulfills me the most is the community of brilliant young ones I have mentored, and shared a part of myself with, allowing me to create ripples of positive influence that will help them navigate life and career”.
Kaitochukwu also highlighted a significant life lesson from her journey. “In my becoming, I allow others to become, and so I remain committed to shining my light and shining it so brightly,” she said.
Expressing gratitude, she credited God for the grace and strength that guided her journey, her family for their unwavering support, and her mentors for shaping her mind and providing guidance.
She also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of her friends and allies in helping her achieve this milestone. At the University of Cambridge, Kaitochukwu will pursue a Master’s Degree in Engineering for Sustainable Development.
She will focus on exploring how business, technology, policy, and other substructures interact with practical engineering solutions to design systems that minimize environmental impact, promote social equity, and ensure economic viability.
Sharing her aspirations, she wrote: “What began as an impulsive action has now transformed into reality. It amazes me how true the words are—‘What seems impossible until it is done starts with a single brave step forward.’
”Looking back on this journey, I am reminded of the resilience it took, the unreal moments, and the understanding that the only limit to our realization of tomorrow is our doubts of today,” Kaitochukwu added.
As she embarks on this new chapter, Kaitochukwu acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains hopeful and determined.
