24-year-old Nigerian Lady bags Microbiology degree with 4.70 first-class, wins scholarship to UK university

AFRICA | 24-year-old Nigerian lady, Adetutu Falade, bagged a Microbiology degree with first-class honors at Crawford University, Ogun State, Nigeria, and a scholarship to study for her master’s degree in the United Kingdom.

Adetutu obtained a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology with a first-class grade of 4.70 out of a possible 5.00 cumulative grade point at Crawford University in Nigeria. Her excellent performance earned her a partial scholarship from the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom.

Sharing her achievement in an interview with Edugist, Adetutu said the academic journey was challenging, but it was awesome to a large extent. Before she enrolled in the university, she encountered a delay of two years after high school.

She recounted that the delay was because her undergraduate study was intended to be done abroad, but the process did not work as planned, so she applied to Crawford University.

Upon her resumption at Crawford University, Adetutu became intentional about every move and action. She knew exactly what she wanted and was focused while at it.

Her goal was to finish with a first-class degree to avail herself of the opportunity to pursue a postgraduate degree abroad, since the plan did not work out for undergraduate study.

Adetutut spent most of her time in the library reading and focused on securing the degree with the best result possible, and in the end her hard work and resilience paid off. Though her initial plans were to earn her undergraduate degree in Medicine and Surgery.

However, due to the level of competition for the program, she had to settle for microbiology. With her academic excellence, she maintained social relations and partook in extracurricular activities.

Adetutu served in several leadership positions, first as vice-president, then in the following year,  as president of her department’s association. Also, her family’s background greatly influenced her career path and choice.

”My dad is a research fellow at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and the London School of Economics, where he received his doctorate degree in social psychology. My mom is a master’s degree holder, likewise, my elder sister who is a pharmacist with a master’s degree in digital marketing,” she said.

She expressed her gratitude to her spouse for his support during her studies. Adetutu said her husband is an integral part of her first-class success story, as she was able to thrive through his guidance and motivation to study.

”My husband, Abraham Kolawole, and I attended Crawford and he was the overall best-graduating student during our set in 2020. We started dating while we were both in the 100 level. Traditionally, people felt it was a distraction but in truth, it wasn’t,” she said.

Her remarkable performance for her undergraduate studies earned her a partial scholarship named “Aberdeen Global Scholarship” from the University of Aberdeen to study for her master’s degree.

It is a scholarship program that deducts a partial sum from the tuition fee for eligible self-funded international postgraduate master’s students. The scholarship is awarded to Nigerian and Ghanaian students. Read more about the scholarship HERE.

Advising students who wish to graduate with outstanding grades, Adetutu urges them to know what they want from the start. She said it is advisable to put in more effort in academics from the start.
