AFRICA | 27 years old, Christine Izuakor has made history as the first African-American woman to earn a PhD in Security Engineering from the University of Colorado, United States.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Christine is the daughter of Nigerian immigrants who moved to the U.S. to pursue higher education. Growing up, she was determined to maximize the opportunities her parents and community had worked hard to create for her.
In 2013, despite discouragement and the lack of role models in her field, Christine decided to pursue a PhD in Security Engineering at the University of Colorado.
Not only did she break barriers as the first African-American woman to complete the program, but she also became the youngest person ever to do so since the university’s founding.

Sharing her achievement on LinkedIn, Christine reflected on how she began her PhD journey at just 23 years old.
She recalled being told that she was too young, too naïve, and too inexperienced to make meaningful contributions to the industry. However, instead of letting those doubts hold her back, she used them as motivation to push forward and remain committed to her goals.
Christine’s academic journey began at DeVry University in Illinois, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a minor in Security Management.
She then pursued a master’s degree in Information Systems Security at the University of Houston before eventually enrolling in her groundbreaking PhD program.
Throughout her research career, Christine has published work in several international journals and has presented her original contributions to the security industry at prestigious international conferences, including events in South Korea and Italy.
Christine said she is sharing her story to inspire others, particularly those who have been told their dreams are unrealistic. She emphasized that with hard work and dedication, it is possible to defy all limits and achieve greatness.
