AFRICA | 40-year-old Nigerian Teacher earns global recognition, wins ₦5million cash prize.
A 40-year-old Nigerian teacher named Kayode Adewale has gained global recognition after being named one of the top 50 finalists for the prestigious Global Teacher Prize.
This accomplishment earned him a ₦5 million cash prize and a bungalow of his choice, awarded by the Governor of Ogun State, Nigeria.
The Global Teacher Prize, a $1 million award established by the Varkey Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO, celebrates outstanding teachers who have made significant contributions to the profession. The prize recognizes educators who impact not only their students but also their communities.

Kayode, a dedicated Mathematics teacher at Imagbon/Imaka Comprehensive High School in Ogun State, is now an ambassador for education in the state.
Praising his remarkable achievements, Governor Dapo Abiodun conferred on him the title of Ogun State Education Ambassador, acknowledging his exceptional service to the teaching profession.
Reflecting on his journey, Kayode shared that his passion for teaching began during his Senior Secondary School 1 (10th grade). While his peers aspired to become lawyers, doctors, and bankers, he dreamed of being a teacher, inspired by a profound Junior Secondary School 3 (9th grade) Mathematics lesson he watched on local television.
At the age of 36—the same age as the teacher who inspired him—Kayode appeared on television for the first time on Ogun State Television in 2020.
Today, he creates Mathematics content in local Nigerian languages, such as Ijebu, driven by his belief that education should be accessible, engaging, and culturally relevant. Kayode’s dedication has earned him numerous accolades over the years.
In 2023, he was named the 2nd Runner-Up Best Teacher in Nigeria and the Ogun State Champion for his outstanding contributions to education. He was also among the Top 10 Finalists of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award.
Internationally, Kayode’s impact extends beyond Nigeria. In 2022, he was selected as a Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Fellow, visiting five U.S. states. In July 2024, he was named a Limitless Global Educator in Houston, Texas.
Kayode expressed profound gratitude to the Varkey Foundation and UNESCO for uplifting classroom teachers worldwide. He also thanked the governor of Ogun State for recognizing and honoring teachers in his state.
He recalled a pivotal moment in 2020 when he was awarded ₦2.5 million as the Best Senior Secondary School Teacher in Ogun State, a recognition that reaffirmed his commitment to excellence in education.
Being the only Nigerian among the Top 50 finalists for the Global Teacher Prize, Kayode is determined to make it to the Top 10. He hopes his journey will serve as a source of inspiration for teachers across Nigeria and beyond, showcasing the transformative power of education.
