A 48-year-old woman named Ebony Chappel has finally graduated from university, 32 years after she completed her high school education.
Ebony, a Harlem native faced so many challenges growing up but she did not let any of them get in the way of her success according to Fox News. She grew up poor and ended up dropping out of high school after she got in trouble.
“Originally in Harlem, I went to Martin Luther King High School, and I got into some trouble, and I got kicked out, and I had to go to an alternative school,” she said. She mentioned that she was raped at 16, and graduated at 17, and give birth to her first child at the young age of 18.
She went on to have three children and six grandchildren, and worked as a hairdresser, where she even got to style Stevie Wonder’s( An American singer hair). In 2019, she got her General Educational Development (GED).

GED is a set of tests that individuals can take to demonstrate their academic knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma. Afterwards Ebony started her own clothing manufacturing business and finally applied to her dream school Clark Atlanta University.
Ebony said since she had not taken the SAT or ACT, she was initially not aware that she could enter the school with her GED, however, the COVID-19 pandemic made it possible. She enrolled in a fashion design course at Clark Atlanta University, United States.
“I didn’t know with having a GED that I could get into a prestigious school like this. I hadn’t taken the SAT or ACT. But I came at the right time because normally they would, but coming in right after COVID, I didn’t have to,” she said.
While a student at the university, she experienced many challenges including being a victim of fire accident and suffered a stroke as a result of her charitable work creating nose masks for others.
“I was making so many masks and giving them away and making them for people that I wound up having a stroke,” she said.
Ebony stated that even though she faced adversity, the school has had such a great influence on her that she eventually wants to come back and teach there. She said her next step is earning a masters in bussiness after which she will proceed to Paris.
“My next step is getting my masters in business and then after that I am going to get my masters in fashion and go to Paris,” Ebony said.
