Young African Lady bags PhD degree at 25 years old, sets outstanding record

A young and brilliant South African Lady, Nomhle Ngwenya has set an outstanding academic recording after emerging as the youngest ever person to bag a PhD degree at the Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Nomhle Ngwenya graduated from the institution with a PhD degree in Geography and Environmental Science at the age of 25 years old. Graduating with the highest academic degree at such young age is outstanding and made her the youngest ever to achieve such a feat in the institution.

Celebrating her success on Twitter, Nomhle Ngewanya said she is truly humbled to be the youngest ever PhD graduate of the school. “I was honored today to have graduated with my fellow PhD Grads. I’m truly humbled to be the youngest ever graduate at Wits at 25 to have obtained a PhD in Science,” she tweeted.

She attained all her higher education degrees from Wits University, South Africa between 2015 and 2022. She had her Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and Sociology, she proceed to bag a Master’s degree in Geography and Environmental Sciences and finally a PhD degree in Geography and Environmental Sciences, all within 7 years.

Nomhle Ngewanya noted that her PhD journey has taught her resilience, passion and the importance of determination in achieving one’s goals.

“With the support and guidance of my supervisor, Prof Simatele, I took on a very big project looking at innovative financial mechanisms in the bond market and how they could play a role in financing the low carbon transition in South Africa,” she said.

Nomhle Ngewanya thanked everyone that contributed to her outstanding journey.

“Without the support and contacts of so many of my research participants on LinkedIn, my research would not have been possible. Thank you to each and every one of you,” she wrote.

Commenting on what is next for her, she said she will always be a game changer in whatever path she follows and “contribute towards research and innovative solutions specifically tailored around climate change and the decarbonisation plans in the developing region.”
